The Friedland reception camp explained

How the Grenzdurchgangslager Friedland is organised, the role of the BVA, paperwork and the first days in Germany.

Grenzdurchgangslager Friedland is the only federal reception camp for late repatriates in Germany. Founded in 1945, it has since played a key role in receiving repatriates, refugees and displaced persons. The centre is run by the federal state of Lower Saxony in close cooperation with the Bundesverwaltungsamt (BVA) in Cologne, which issues the admission letter (Aufnahmebescheid) required to enter the country.

After arrival, every repatriate goes through registration, a medical check, document verification and receives the Registrierschein, a document certifying late-repatriate status under § 4 BVFG. Based on the Registrierschein the family is distributed to a federal state (Verteilverfahren) according to quotas and family links.

The average stay ranges from a few days to a few weeks. During this time families receive basic counselling, referrals to Integrationskurs language and integration courses, information about statutory health insurance and social benefits. The camp includes residential blocks, a canteen, a children's room, the BVA reception and Russian-speaking staff.
